Sustainable Development Goals ; SDG 2 - Hunger

SDG 2, also known as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 2, aims to achieve "Zero Hunger" by 2030 by ending hunger, achieving food security and improved nutrition, and promoting sustainable agriculture worldwide.

Key Objectives

  • SDG 2 focuses on ensuring everyone, especially vulnerable groups like infants, children, and small-scale food producers, have access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food year-round.

  • It also seeks to eliminate all forms of malnutrition, double agricultural productivity for small-scale producers, and promote resilient, sustainable food systems.

Main Targets

  • Universal access to safe and nutritious food, prioritizing the poor and vulnerable.

  • Ending all forms of malnutrition, with special emphasis on children under five, adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating women, and the elderly.

  • Increasing agricultural productivity and incomes, especially for small-scale producers, and ensuring equal access to land, technology, and markets.

  • Promoting sustainable food production systems and resilient agricultural practices, including maintaining genetic diversity of crops and animals.

  • Addressing trade restrictions, improving market functioning for food commodities, and supporting investment, research, and technology in agriculture.

Global Challenges

  • The number of people facing hunger has risen due to factors such as pandemics, climate change, conflict, and growing inequalities.

  • Chronic malnutrition affects an estimated 155 million children, hindering development and perpetuating cycles of poverty and ill health.

  • Small food producers, who play a crucial role in feeding the world, continue to struggle with limited resources and market access.

Why SDG 2 Matters

  • Achieving zero hunger would improve health and productivity, allowing people to build better lives and communities.

  • Sustainable agriculture is vital for protecting ecosystems and ensuring food supplies for future generations.

SDG 2 calls for worldwide collaboration, targeted investments, and policy reforms to ensure no one goes hungry and agricultural practices support both people and the planet.
